This working paper describes the working place on an inland waterway vessel (wheelhouse, deck, accommodation and engine room), together with its mechanical and electronic devices. The paper gives an overview of the inland navigation fleet and developments that influence the working environment on board. The paper concentrates on dry and liquid cargo vessels forming the backbone of the fleet. It investigates the interaction between humans and equipment. Technological developments are described and their impacts on life on board are analysed. The paper gives a very detailed account of the daily processes carried out and the on-board equipment available for doing so. It recognises improvements resulting from innovation (e.g. rate-of-turn autopilot) but also draws attention to failings in procedures and systems in use (e.g. lack of official electronic navigable charts).
